Tobacco Smoke Does Immediate Damage

Even occasional smoking or secondhand smoke causes immediate damage to one’s organs and poses risk of serious illness or death, the U.S. Surgeon General said in a new report released Thursday.

“There is no risk-free level of exposure to tobacco smoke,” it said.
The report, “How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease” is Regina Benjamin’s first as Surgeon General and describes tobacco smoke’s assault on the body. “The chemicals in tobacco smoke reach your lungs quickly every time you inhale causing damage immediately,” Benjamin said in the report. “Inhaling even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke can also damage your DNA, which can lead to cancer.”
Tobacco smoke is made up of more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds are toxic, and at least 70 are carcinogens.
According to the report, smoking is responsible for more than 85% of lung cancers — but there are a host of other chronic diseases directly related to exposure to tobacco smoke. It’s also a major cause of heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
In fact, the report said even low levels of exposure, like occasional smoking; having just a few cigarettes a day and secondhand smoke are enough to increase the risk of a cardiovascular event.
The report links smoking directly to 13 different cancers including esophagus, trachea, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix and acute myeloid leukemia. It ties smoking to more than a dozen chronic diseases like stroke, blindness, periodontitis, heart disease, pneumonia; reproductive problems like diminishing fertility; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
Secondhand smoke affects adults and children differently. According to the report, children exposed can suffer middle ear infections, impaired lung function and are more susceptible to sudden infant death syndrome. Adults are at risk for lung cancer, nasal irritation, heart disease and reproductive problems like low birth weight deliveries.
Dr. Tim McAfee, director of the Office on Smoking and Health, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was one of 64 scientists who worked on the report. He said any exposure is harmful.
“Casual smokers think they are improving their health by cutting back but there is no safe level,” he said. “It affects people’s DNA immediately, and their heart and blood vessels literally seconds to minutes after being exposed.”
McAfee said secondhand smoke is no less dangerous than smoking.
“It inflames and irritates the lining of blood vessels, making the blood more prone to clotting and the combination of inflammation, irritation and increased clotting can literally cause a heart attack even from the kind of exposure from walking into a smoky bar,” he said.
According to the report, today’s tobacco products are designed to be more attractive to smokers, and they are more addictive. They deliver nicotine faster making them more subject to abuse than in the past.
Additives like ammonia are now in cigarettes. It converts the nicotine, making it easier to pass through the blood brain barrier.
Other additives like moisture enhancers and sugar reduce the harshness of the smoke and that enhances the taste. This allows smokers to tolerate the smoke and pull it more deeply into their lungs, McAfee said.
Efforts over the last 20 to 30 years to put out “filtered,” “low-tar” and “light” products have not reduced the overall risk of disease, he said. “None of these changes have been effective in making the products safer,” McAfee said.
But there has been progress.
Up until a year ago, tobacco products were 100% unregulated, McAfee said. But the Food and Drug Administration has recently been given more regulatory authority over tobacco products. And last month, it announced graphic warning labels would be added to cigarette packs.
With more than 440,000 deaths each year caused by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, the time to act is now, Benjamins said.
“This report makes it clear — quitting at any time gives your body a chance to heal the damage caused by smoking,” she said. “It’s never too late to quit, but the sooner you do it, the better.”

How Would You Look Stylish In Cold Weather

Winter is a season when you want and need to look good. Health is above fashion of course but you can look elegant in any weather if you know how to choose and combine clothes. You can be well-dressed and warm at the same time!
To keep warm you need to choose good items to dress your upper part. The main thing is to choose the right fabric and length to avoid fatter look.
Find a top with long sleeves that narrow to wrists. This can be a silky blouse or the one of another flimsy material. Don’t wear tops with wide wrist area even if those are top trendy. Cold wind can go inside and you might catch a severe chest cold.
Don a sweater or a clinging shirt over the blouse. What is important here is that the bottom part of the sweater/shirt shouldn’t be wide either, because you will look fatter. Those women who like wearing cashmere and wool know that properties of the material are what matter not the thickness of it.
If your lingerie is all the way covered with the clothes it doesn’t mean you can wear something horrible down there. Don’t sacrifice your femininity to the cold. It’s possible to find sexy but warm underwear.
If you wear trousers don thin tights underneath. The best fabric for winter trousers is wool. And trousers should be tight-fitting.
If you prefer skirts, opt for warmer tights. And of course the longer the skirt the warmer you feel. Forget about skirts which widen to the bottom. Straight design is the best.
No matter what you choose, trousers or a skirt, you should wear a good pair of high boots which can protect your feet and ankles from the cold. Opt for high boots of the same color as your skirt or trousers.
A coat or an anorak should be of high quality and warm. The length of it determines your entire look. Choose a coat that fits you well and flatters your figure. Opt for a design that lengthens your silhouette rather than shortens it.
To create a casual look, choose short coats or anoraks. But be careful as a too short anorak can create a ‘ball’ effect at the belly and you will look fatter. Hip-long coat or an anorak looks good on everyone and it is comfortable as well.
For a smart look opt for a coat that goes down your knees or a bit higher. Trapeze-shaped, short and loose coats look more casual than smart. The color of your anorak or a coat depends on the color of your clothes. Everything should go in harmony.

Angelina Jolie On Golden Globe Nomination.

Angelina Jolie is as confused as the rest of us at her Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Comedy or Musical … for The Tourist.

Come on, Hollywood Foreign Press. If you want to toss an A-list star a nomination strictly for the buzz or access, go ahead. But … it’s a spy thriller.
Chelsea Handler’s enemy said she and Johnny Depp “were laughing because it’s the first time that I’ve been in the comedic category … it’s new for me.”

She will face off against Annette Bening and Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right), Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs) and Emma Stone (Easy A).
Depp, who also received a nod for his performance, along with one for Alice in Wonderland, said he was “very touched” by the double nomination.
His funny bone in particular.

Nip/Tuck Doc Dylan Walsh

Dylan Walsh’s marriage is Going, Going…gone  just like the rest of Hollywood’s relationships this week. The erstwhile Nip/Tuck star has filed for divorce from actress Joanna Going after six years of marriage, citing the ever-popular irreconcilable differences. They have a 7-year-old daughter together and Walsh is asking for joint custody.

According to the petition filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Walsh—whose real first name is Charles—and Going separated on Oct. 1.
This was Walsh’s second stab at marriage. He and Big Love star Melora Walters divorced in 2003 after seven years and two children together.

Kim Kardashian Voted As A Best Booty Of 2010

Celebrity Mistresses Of The Year.

Where would THG be without good cheating scandals? Sure, these women are trashy beyond belief, but boy do they keep things interesting with their sexting, locking themselves in closets, making up sex tape rumors and such.
We despise them. And applaud their efforts. Below are THG’s esteemed finalists for the Rachel Uchitel Award as the top celebrity mistress of 2010 …
Devon and Joslyn James. Yes, we know Tiger Woods’ mistresses are soo 2009. But Devon James and Joslyn James (no blood relation, LOTS of sexual relations) simply refused to crawl back in the hole from whence they came.
Brittney Jones. Ashton Kutcher’s alleged mistress is relentless. That much cannot be disputed. Every time her accusations are shot down, she comes up with even more ridiculous ones. Threesomes, sex tapes … snuff films may be next.
Erin Barry. She may not be an actual mistress, but when you’re sexting Tony Parker and that’s why he gets divorced from Eva Longoria, you’re on the list.
Jasmine Waltz. A star-stalking pro if ever there were one. At least she said that David Arquette was only mediocre in the sack, though. Props there.
Capri Anderson. The porn star/stripper/escort/whatever she is co-starred in Charlie Sheen’s now-infamous hotel meltdown, and having witnessed this chapter of his downward spiral, promptly moved to cash in with a lawsuit.
He may countersue for extortion. $h!t happens when you’re Charlie Sheen.

The Fall Of Niagara Falls.

Decades of decay, corruption, and failed get-rich-quick schemes have made the city one of the most intractable disasters in the U.S.
a musty dive in Niagara Falls, the decrepit city in western New York State that sits atop one of the natural wonders of the world. The editor, Mike Hudson, slapped down some cash and ordered a round of Labatt’s for the house, which consisted of five people, including the proprietor. Hudson, the founder of the weekly tabloid Niagara Falls Reporter, freely refers to his town as “a godforsaken place,” and it was hard to argue with the assessment in the neighborhood surrounding the bar. The area is the worst the city has to offer, a place of drugs and crime and boarded-up brick houses.
Hudson knocked back a shot of Sambuca and rummaged around for his cigarettes, shouting epithets and contributing jokes to a running discussion on local politics. “It’s been all downhill in this town since 1969,” said one of the other patrons, a ruddy-faced man who had his first name, Fred, sewn onto his windbreaker. “Ever since they knocked down the whole goddam downtown,” muttered the bartender, Frankie G. (short for Giaquinto).
“That’s what everyone will tell you about the place,” Hudson said later that night, over plates of spaghetti at a local Italian joint, which was bedecked with photos of hometown mobsters and dead celebrities.
Niagara Falls’ descent into blight—in spite of its proximity to an attraction that draws at least 8 million tourists each year—is a tale that Hudson’s little newspaper has been telling for years. It encompasses just about every mistake a city could make, including the one Frankie G. cited: a 1960s mayor’s decision to bulldoze his quaint downtown and replace it with a bunch of modernist follies. There was a massive hangar-like convention center designed by Philip Johnson; Cesar Pelli’s glassy indoor arboretum, the Wintergarden, which was finally torn down because it cost a fortune to heat through the Lake Erie winter; a shiny office building known locally as the “Flashcube,” formerly the headquarters of a chemical company and now home to a trinket market. Once a hydropowered center of industry, Niagara Falls is now one of America’s most infamous victims of urban decay, hollowed out by four decades of job loss, mafia infiltration, political corruption, and failed get-fixed-quick schemes. Ginger Strand, author of Inventing Niagara: Beauty, Power, and Lies, called the place “a history in miniature of wrongheaded ideas about urban renewal.”
Niagara Falls has something that sets it apart from other terminally depressed Rust Belt towns, something that makes its economic failure all the more remarkable: those falls, the 176-foot-tall cascade of thunder that is no less breathtaking for being your grandparents’ honeymoon destination. For many years the city’s route to a better future seemed straightforward, and it led to the water’s edge, where you could look across the border to Canada and see a brightly lit skyline of new high-rise hotels. “It’s a booming tourist mecca over there,” Hudson said. “Over here, it’s a slum.”While the Canadians were building theme restaurants and luxury suites, the American side spiraled downward. Niagara’s median household income is now just $30,000, 40 percent below the national average, and one-fifth of its 50,000 residents (down from 100,000 in the 1960s) live below the poverty line. As of November, unemployment was 7.5 percent, lower than the national average; so many have been out of work for so long that they no longer register as part of the workforce.
There’s a litany of explanations for this, but for the last decade, through a boom and a bust, several mayors, and nonstop recriminations, a single constant has loomed over the city: the Manhattan real estate billionaire Howard Milstein. In the late 1990s, the municipal government designated a private group backed by Milstein as the “master redeveloper” of 140 acres of downtown real estate. Milstein appeared, at first glance, to be just the man to help the city finally capitalize on its natural potential. He had a hotel and other development interests in Times Square—a fabulously successful example of commercial reclamation—and he proposed to revive Niagara Falls along similar lines, as a casino-centered playground. It never happened. Today, Milstein is still sitting on an enormous swath of land, a ghost town of abandoned homes, shuttered storefronts, and vacant lots in the shadow of a closed-down factory where Nabisco used to make Shredded Wheat.

Kids tracking Santa get Michelle Obama surprise

Eight-year-old Juliana-Rose Hatcher had tracked Santa Claus all of Friday with the aid of NORAD's Santa hotline, before she got some unexpected help from Michelle Obama. The first lady stayed behind when her husband, President Barack Obama, and daughters Sasha and Malia hit the beach on their Christmas vacation in Hawaii to answer calls from children trying to pinpoint Santa's whereabouts.

"She asked me what I wanted from Santa and I told her an MP3 player and she said her daughter wants an MP3 player too," Juliana, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, told Reuters.
Her mother Jennifer said at first they thought it was a joke or a prerecorded message but quickly realized "wow, it really, really is her."

Austin Futch, 10, from Memphis, Tennessee, said he quizzed the first lady about a few things on his mind concerning life in the White House.
He wanted to know how it felt to be surrounded at all times by Secret Service agents -- not too bad because they are nice guys -- and if it was hard being married to the president.
"No, he's a pretty good guy," Michelle Obama told him, according to a transcript of the calls released by the White House.

Fish furious as Odesnik prepares to return from drug ban

Mardy Fish has criticized tennis authorities for halving the suspension handed out to fellow American player Wayne Odesnik for importing controlled drugs.Odesnik will be able to resume his career from December 29 after the International Tennis Federation conditionally canceled the second year of his ban following his cooperation with anti-doping officials.
The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to importing human growth hormone into Australia at the start of last year, but is now free to play again when the 2011 season begins Down Under next month.
The ITF said he had provided "substantial assistance" to its anti-doping program, and that his requirement to do so is "ongoing."

Fish described the ITF's decision as "a black eye for all of sport, not just tennis," in quotes reported by U.S. newspaper USA Today. "He's a good player on enhanced substances. Let's see if he can be a good player without them," the world No. 16 said.

Odesnik, who was born in South Africa but moved to the United States when young, has slipped from a career-high 77th to completely off the ATP Tour's rankings list."I am thrilled that I can return to the game and compete in the sport about which I am truly passionate. I have learned a lot during my time away from competitive tennis and I now have even a greater appreciation for what a privilege it is to be a professional athlete," Odesnik said in a statement.
"I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, true close friends and fans who have stood by me during this difficult time. I am deeply grateful and humbled by your support."

Jelena Dokic receives wildcard for Australian Open 2011

Just as the Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley hinted, Jelena Dokic has been awarded a wildcard into the main draw of the 2011 Australian Open.

Tiley considers that Dokic deserves a wildcard because of the determination and good form she showed during the playoffs, which she lost in the final to Olivia Rogowska.
Here's how Dokic commented on her last week's form, I had a pretty good playoff considering I didn't play a match in over two months, it was a good practice run for me and I'm very happy to receive the wildcard. I did play well and I got better with each match.

Dokic, who made a stunning run to the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2009, believes that surprises can always happen, especially in the beginning of the season:

Obviously the [Australian Open] draw will be very tough. You've got to go match by match, you never know what can happen. There's always been kind of underdogs that have come [through], especially early in the year as everyone still coming off their breaks, their off-seasons. My goal is not to just do well at the Australian Open, it's to play well.

Benefits of Drinking Apple Juice

Apple juice contains a variety of essential nutrients which are useful in aiding the body to combat certain ailments. It contains vitamins B and C, and a number of minerals, including phosphorus, iron, chlorine, silicon, potassium and calcium. It also contains a good quantity of pectin, which has a soothing effect upon the intestines and is an aid to combating constipation.

It has a beneficial effect upon the balance of good and bad bacteria in the colon. Drinking apple juice will help with the elimination of toxins inside the body and will help to improve digestion.
It is believed that apple juice can have a positive effect upon the level of cholesterol because of the high levels of anti-oxidants present.

These anti-oxidants may be useful in the prevention of such diseases as cancer and heart disease, and they are thought by some to be helpful with weight loss as well. The cloudier the appearance of the juice, the more anti-oxidants are present. Several studies have demonstrated that cloudy apple juice is better for your cardio-vascular system than the non-cloudy alternative. There are compounds in apple juice called phyto-nutrients, and these have a positive effect upon the bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body. The oxidation of LDL causes plaque to form on the walls of the coronary artery, leading to atherosclerosis. Researchers have said that apple juice can reduce the risk factors for heart disease.
It is best to juice the skin and pulp as well as the rest of the apple when juicing, and for this reason it is better to source organically grown apples so that you are not including the residue of toxic sprays which may have accumulated on the skin. Including the skin and pulp in your juice will also mean that it has a greater quantity of anti-oxidants and minerals.

Apple juice is said to have a beneficial effect upon gallstones and gouty arthritis. Allow a bit of time for your apples to ripen if they do not appear to be ripe enough. As the skin ripens, it is said to retain increasing amounts of nutrients, and the flavour will definitely improve. Apple juice is excellent for young children because it is a delicious and nutritious drink that they should be more than happy to have. It is also an energy booster because of its natural sugar content, so is good for young children who are always on the go.
The nutritional benefits of drinking apple juice can be enhanced further by mixing it with other nutrient rich juices such as carrot juice or celery juice. A daily portion of such a mixture will not only be a delicious pleasure, but will be of lasting nutritional value.
